What does "flame retardant" mean?

The technical term "flame-retardant" refers to materials that belong to building material class B1 in accordance with DIN 4102. Materials in this class are difficult to ignite at natural temperatures. Classification in this class can only be achieved if the material has been tested and classified by an approved institute. There is also the suffix "B2" (normally flammable) and "B3" (highly flammable). If the highest level of safety is required, materials in fire protection class A1 are used. A1 designates building materials that are non-combustible.

What applications are there for flame-retardant materials?

The use of B1-certified materials in public buildings is prescribed by law through the fire protection standard. The fire protection regulations minimize the risk of a fire starting and spreading, so that the people in the buildings can be better protected. The use of flame-retardant materials gives visitors, guests and children the time they need to leave the building safely in the event of an emergency.
